This trip to the world's highest capital city begins and ends with a flight from Kathmandu - Lhasa to Kathmandu. This one of most scenic flight of the world as if offers a breath taking bird's eye view of the all the great Himalayan peaks in the Nepal ~ Tibet / China frontier - including Mt. Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho-Oyu, before it scans the great plateau of Tibet with some beautiful lakes in it.
The flight from Kathmandu takes off in the morning and it takes about an hour to reach the Gongar airport in the outskirt of Lhasa. It takes about another hour from the Gongar airport to Lhasa city. There is no program on the day of your arrival in Lhasa for you will need to take a good rest to let your body acclimatized to Lhasa's thin air.
Following day, early in the morning we start our tour of Lhasa City with the visit the Jokhang Temple which is Tibet's most sacred shrine, the focal point of pilgrims from the entire Tibetan Plateau. Situated at heart of the old town of Lhasa, it was founded by a Nepalese princess who had married the then powerful Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo around 650 AD. The Barkhor market around the the Jokhang monastery has interesting shops selling colorful Tibetan dresses, handicrafts, art galleries and more. After Jokhang Temple, we visit Sera Monastery, which one of the six great Gelukpa sect monasteries in Tibet. This 15 century monastery sprawl of golden roofs and whitewashed walls in few miles north of Lhasa. There are several old hermitages and temples connected by pilgrim's trail high above the monastery.
On day 3, we we drive to Drepung monsatery, once the largest and most powerful of the six great Gelugpa religious centre in Tibet. Located 8 km NW of Lhasa on the Gephel Utse ridge. At the time of Dalai Lama V, this monastery had over 10,000 monks who hailed from 321 different branch monasteries. Following the visit to Drepung monastery, we drive to the Potala palace - the traditional seat of (then) Tibetan government
